Effluents

Ozone for wastewater.

Ozone can be integrated as an advanced treatment stage when the treatment goal, effluent composition and process economics justify it.

The application

Actual effluent determines the system, not the generator sheet.

A municipal plant, a food-factory discharge and a pharmaceutical effluent may share the same flow but have very different ozone demand. Composition, pH, solids and variation across a day determine whether oxidation adds value.

Before investing in industrial capacity, treatability testing can show ozone consumption, which parameters respond and whether the stage belongs before or after other treatment.

Treatment options

Three problems that need different treatment.

Design must answer a measurable outlet target. Ozone may serve as polishing, targeted oxidation or a component of odor control.

Municipal effluent

Consider a stage after biological treatment to improve selected parameters or support disinfection. Test several operating conditions.

Industrial discharge

The matrix may contain difficult compounds, color or strong variation. Measure the target and examine effects on later stages.

Odor and pumping stations

H₂S and intermittent emissions call for source, air-capture or hydraulic-point assessment, ventilation and off-gas control.

Specific applications

From municipal effluent to industrial discharge.

Explore wastewater streams with different loads, contaminants and flow variation to plan a useful treatability test.

Municipal wastewater plants

An ozone stage can be evaluated after biological treatment to improve selected effluent parameters and support intended disinfection or reuse.

Effluent demand changes with seasons, rainfall and plant operation. Test dose and contact time before fixing capacity, transfer and energy demand. Off-gas management and maintenance are part of the design.

How to verify: Compare COD, color, turbidity, microbiological indicators and specific energy use against the project objective.

Industrial effluents

Food, chemical, paper and pharmaceutical effluents can vary widely. Ozone is assessed as an oxidation or polishing step when a measurable target contaminant exists.

Flow alone is insufficient for sizing. Analyze COD, pH, solids, target compounds and variability; treatability testing helps establish ozone demand, byproducts and the best point in the treatment train.

How to verify: Measure target compounds before and after treatment, together with transferred dose and operational changes.

Leachate and difficult effluents

Leachate often has hard-to-predict loads and composition. Ozone may be a candidate for oxidation testing, but feasibility depends on the actual matrix and pretreatment.

First characterize the stream and define the parameter to change. Then test dose and time, watch for possible byproducts and compare cost with other stages. No universal reduction is promised without testing.

How to verify: Track COD, color, target contaminants and any change in biodegradability, as appropriate.

Wastewater pumping stations

Pumping stations can generate hydrogen sulfide and changing odor loads. Ozone is assessed for captured air or selected hydraulic points before odor disperses.

Identify retention time, ventilation, airflow and H₂S variation. Treatment needs capture, mixing, contact, off-gas control and worker protection; direct water injection requires a separate hydraulic review.

How to verify: Measure H₂S or relevant compounds and record complaints, flow and residual ozone under comparable conditions.

Decision criteria

How to decide on effluent treatment

Variation drives design

The same facility can discharge different effluent by shift, cleaning cycle or season. A proposal based on one sample may miss demand peaks. Sampling and, where appropriate, pilot testing should represent the real operating range.

Investment decision

A pilot compares response at different doses and contact times. The next review covers energy, feed gas, transfer and maintenance. We recommend testing wastewater before major investment in this application.
